My guest on episode #113, Michael “Spaz” McGoorty, shared how, in building their comedy platform–Casey ‘N’ Spaz Comedy, they integrated making it a platform not just for themselves, but for others, as well. With a lot of hard work, they are now partnering with the Palm Beach Improv for a regular monthly event–a huge accomplishment! What a smart way to build a brand, as there are inherent benefits to structuring a platform for yourself by including others.
First of all, the most obvious benefit is networking. Establishing connections in a positive light with people (such as giving THEM a way to shine as well), creates a community of like-minded folks who can support you on YOUR journey. And, as they grown in their successes, they will recommend you to others, which is the most powerful marketing tool of all. So, your network will naturally grow in a very organic and strong way.
Also, if you are in a position to help others strengthen a skill that you already have some expertise in, they will likely be able and willing to help you out with any special skills they have as well. (And, no, I don’t mean nunchuck skills, bow-hunting skills, or computer-hacking skills… GOSH!) Need help designing a logo, cracking though an industry “who’s who” firewall, finding the right producer, etc…?? Well, if you have a project to do that involves a lack of a specific resource, the people you have forged relationships with over time through supporting them, will now be great earpieces and bridge-makers to help and contribute to what you’re doing.
Another benefit to consider in deciding to build a platform that also helps promote others is that it lends itself to natural team-building. This is the upgraded version of the general support I just discussed. By involving people in your process (especially when done early), you will be growing in a group along with other creatives with different strengths and visions. Naturally, teams can foster in these environments, leading to building up and sprouting new opportunities and projects you perhaps would never have thought of.
In charting out your journey of curving your cube and going from being a dreamer to being a doer, creating a platform to help others has immeasurable benefits towards helping yourself as well.
